No Other Rock

As you know, today is New Year’s Eve. If the title of this post has any meaning to you, you’ll likely be among the many of people around the world who will be watching the television screen as we usher in 2007. I have been doing some work to prepare for the launch of this project and hope it will live up to your expectations. You’ll notice I have added a couple new pages . . . one of which is a page about linking to NoOtherRock.com where you can snatch some images/logos to be used in doing so.

Be sure to check back sometime tomorrow after 8:00AM EST so you can share in the first daily devotion with Awake, My Heart. Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Awake, My Heart

December 25, 2006 at 12:01 am | In Awake My Heart | No Comments

This poem, written by J. Sidlow Baxter, appears at the front of the devotional. Thought I would provide it for you as a small form of exposition:

Awake, My Heart

Awake, my heart, in joyful lays
To Him who blesses all thy days.
His lovingkindness crowneth thee
With daily mercies rich and free.

Wake, to worship with the morn,
And consecrate the day new-born.
Again, at eve in prayer be found,
As shadows curtain earth around.

Awake, thy watchful vigils keep!
For some neglect and idly sleep.
Lift up to God, in sacred tryst,
Thy priestly ministry in Christ.

Awake, His all-wise will to see
In all that He assigns for thee.
Whate’er His providence permits
Designs for thee fresh benefits.

Awake to trust and lvoe and serve,
for can His mercies less deserve?
Till yonder, perfected in love,
Thy hear awakes in heaven above.

Who Was Dr. J. Sidlow Baxter? Why “Awake My Heart”?

December 23, 2006 at 9:35 pm | In FAQ | 2 Comments

Throughout 2007, we will be going through Dr. J. Sidlow Baxter’s devotional, “Awake, My Heart.” As I have already discussed, I feel that I was called to begin with this book. If you missed that, please feel free to contact me via e-mail and I will discuss further with you.

For me, that call is enough. However, many of you may be wondering “why should I care” about that book. In other words, you may need a form of validation, if you will. So, as I make preparations for this “project” I will present that information to you.

There is a very brief Wiki on that presents a high-level biographical overview. From elsewhere on the Web, I can provide you the following details:

J. Sidlow Baxter was born in Australia and grew up in Lancashire, England. He attended Spurgeon’s Theological College in London and was a pastor in Scotland and England. He is the author of over thirty books and has ministered in churches, Bible Conferences, and missionary centers throughout the United States, Canada, Great Britain and other places around the world. [source: ]

His most popular work Explore the Book was published in 1987 (ISBN 0310206200). It is a 1760 page book that offers and analysis and summary of each book of the Bible.

From the back of the book, it reads that the devotional:

…continues to challenge and encourage readers with its biblical insight and personal warmth. With more than one million collies in print, Awake, My Heart is more than just another book of brief, daily devotions. As Dr. Baxter writes in the forward, each of the entries is “not only devotional, but expository and homiletical so far as space allows. Moreover, each article is one complete study-in-brief.”

A quick perusal of the book’s contents confirms this description. No devotional is in excess of one page. Each begins with a piece of scripture, and though I have not read any of them in depth at this point, they appear to be lesson oriented and spiritually purposeful. I’m looking very forward to getting started.
