The Ribband of Blue

Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘Throughout the generations to come you are to make tassels on the corners of your garments, with a blue cord on each tassel. You will have these tassels to look at and so you will remember all the commands of the LORD, that you may obey them and not prostitute yourselves by going after the lusts of your own hearts and eyes. Then you will remember to obey all my commands and will be consecrated to your God. ~ Numbers 15:38-40

Two nights ago I was talking with someone about the meticulous commands that God gave - just as depicted in the Scripture above. It is with good reason that these commands are so precise.

As Baxter says, in this example there are three specific reasons. The first two are as 1.) an aid to remembrance, and 2.) an urge to obedience. However, the third reason is paramount; it is symbolic of our separateness (” . . . and will be consecrated to your God”).

A separation symbolised [sic] by a blue border on their apparel was evidently meant to be a separation obvious to all; yet not an odd or ugly kind of isolation; a separation clinging about them all the time, and meant to be specially observable both to wearer and watcher when the wearer bent to earthly activities.

Today, my prayer for you and I is that we will not overlook the little things and miss God’s commandments.
