The Sadness of Doubt

Not all men have faith. ~ II Thessalonians 3:2

Wow. The timing of this devotion cannot be mere chance or coincidence.

Today, I read a devotion that spoke of several philosophers - all of them rather contemporary (we’re not talking Plato here). It presented their views and statements on life with a non-existent God (in their eyes of course).

Their outlooks are bleak and hopeless. As Baxter writes;

Many have thought that atheism would give them mental freedom from a binding idea. The real motive has been selfish rebellion against a sense of accountability. Always they have found atheism a false freedom - freedom from truth, to slavedom in darkness.

Now, here is why I laud the timing.

As I read Baxter’s devotion, there is much to do with countering atheism. I am reminded of three posts at Think Christian (Debating an atheist, Debating an atheist: part deux, and Debating an atheist: part trois). All of them were posted on May 3rd and I highly encourage you to read them.

If you do, you will also learn that ABC is hosting a debate in which Actor Kirk Cameron and author Ray Comfort will seek to prove God’s existence, absolutely and scientifically, without mentioning the Bible or faith. ABC will host the debate in New York City on May 5, 2007 (that’s today by the way). The debate will be streamed LIVE on their website (ABC.com) and will also be filmed for “Nightline.” [source: ChristianNewsWire]

Today, my prayer for you and I is that we are accepting fo the fact of God’s existence and that we will pray daily for the spiritual enlightenment of those who doubt or deny.
