Are You Following?
May 11, 2007 at 7:48 am | In Awake My Heart | No CommentsLovest thou Me? … Feed My sheep … Follow Me. ~ John 21:15,17,19
To follow up yesterday’s devotion, we consider the third aspect of serving the Lord. First, we learned that we must continually develop in our degree of love for Him, and secondly, we learned that we must experieince and accept His ordination.
Today, we add the third component, which is to be obedient in our following of Him. In speaking with Peter, the Lord added “Follow Me.” To this, Peter responded, “Lord, what shall this man [being John] do?”
This is extremely meaningful because the Lord simply commands, “Follow Me.” There are no conditions.
It is not “Follow me . . . if you want to.”
It is not “Follow me . . . if it fits your schedule.”
It is not “Follow me . . . on your terms.”
It is not “Follow me . . . once in a while.”
I am sure you get the point. The Lord commanded simply to “Follow Me.” That means forever and in all ways at all times.
But there is a second part of this command. When Peter asks “Lord, what shall this man [being John] do?” The response is met an equally simple command. “What is that to thee? Follow thou Me.”
Peter has expressed curiosity with regards to John. The Lord rebukes Peter to suggest - it is of no worry what John does . . . YOU, Peter, follow Me.
Today, my prayer for you and I is that our first concerns must ever be our own individual obedience.
