Let Us Pray for Victory

Rest . . . from all his enemies. ~ II Samuel 7:1

Note: This devotion is from July 24.

There are many physical enemies that cause us harm or to stray from our Lord’s work. And we need rest from those physical enemies. But there are those spiritual enemies too . . . such as fear, pride, envy, hatred, doubt, the flesh and anxiety.

Today, I pray that you and I will receive such rest by asking for it prayerfully.

Where and When and Why

From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee; when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the Rock that is higher than I. ~ Psalm 61:2

Note: This devotion is from July 23.

Continuing from the previous devotion, let’s consider the way David prays:

Where: From the end of the earth.
When: When my heart is overwhelmed.
Why: Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.

There are three great lessons here:

  • God in Christ is our immovable Rock and Refuge, cleft to be our hiding place.
  • This Rock is “higher” than we are, and high above all the storms.
  • We need to be “led” there - and that is what the Holy Spirit does for us in every stormy trial.

Today, I pray that you and I will remember our umbrella of the Holy Spirit for those days of stormy trials.

Crying Turned to Signing

Hear my cry, Oh God; attend unto my prayer. ~ Psalm 61:1

Note:
This devotion is from July 22.

“The secret of turning sorrow to joy is surely coveted by us all. Look at this psalm and learn the formula. Before David’s crying was turned to signing, it was turned to praying.”

As we read, David asks God to hear his cry and then attend to his prayer.

Crying is the most basic forms of expression. And the sorrows for which we cry are angels in disguise when the cause us to cry. May our trials be stepping stones to blessings.

Today I pray that you and I will remember our Father understands the reasons behind all our cries . . . may we remember to ask in prayer.

Truth in its Best Attire

Speaking the truth in love . . . ~ Ephesians 4:15

Note: This post is for the July 21 devotion.

Here is why I will always run with my head down in shame when I sense a political or religious debate: ultimately, they turn into “I’m right and you’re wrong” circular discussions. In doing so, each party has closed themselves to any possibility of understanding.

This may seem a bit off, but in today’s devotion, it reverences “speaking” the truth. As Baxter points out, a better interpretation might say “holding” the truth and Paul’s actual word, “aletheuontes” literally means being the truth. In essence, we are to embody the truth.

But what is even more important, at least I think so anyway, is that regardless of the vehicle, it is all to be “in love.”

“…even evangelical truth can become the tool of narrow bigotry and petty hatreds and denominational animosities, if it is not held “in love.” See what I mean?

Today, I pray that you and I will embody truth and not represent the potential pitfalls of doing so.

The Canaan Borderers

Let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession, and bring us not over Jordan. ~ Numbers 32:5

Note: This post is applicable for the devotion on July 20th. Very behind.

Sorry for the lack of diligence on my part with keeping up. For the most part, I am current on my readings, but not on my postings.

I have to confess that I have been experiencing some personal trials both physically and emotionally - both playing on each other, for the about a month. As a result, my connection with God and my motivation for this site has suffered.

Still, I feel I must stay the course and see this year through. At that time, we’ll see where it will go from there.

All that said, here comes a confession of sorts . . . I got absolutely nothing out of this day’s devotion. Nothing spoke to me and I have nothing to add.

Today, I pray that you and I will seek to do better with each and every day.
