Not Many Wise or Mighty
September 20, 2007 at 8:25 pm | In Awake My Heart, Blessings, God, Ponders, Providence, Serving the Lord | No CommentsNot many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise . . . ~ I Corinthians 26-31
Note: This devotion is for August 4 and 5.
It is one thing to be called at our conversion to Christ, but it is another to be chosen through our consecration to Christ. By chosen, it infers a special manifestation of Him to others.
The Lord is very specific in who He chooses; which is why we see the “not many” in the passage to start these devotions. But think about those He chooses. Most often, they are people of modest means from small towns in professions that are all but glamorous.
But why does He not call others? Why not the wise, the mighty and noble? Among those things that Baxter suggests, I think the reason of worldly absorption is most apt.
Most of us are too conformed to this world and its affairs that service to Him might actually be beneath us! I say this because there is a proneness to natural humanly conceit.
It’s a topic I have thought much about lately. We as a people know very little shame any longer. We rudely talk on cell phones in checkout lines, movie theaters and any other public venue. We puff our smoke in the faces of the health conscious, we . . . okay, I’m rambling here. But my point is that we are self absorbed in our careers, our toys, our fun, OURSELVES! How on earth can we expect the Lord to choose us for His divine purpose when we can help no one but ourselves?
But the thing we must remember is “that no flesh should glory in His presence” (verse 29).
Today, I pray that you and I will humble ourselves before the Lord.
